Liquid 2-Phenoxyethanol is a germicidal and germistatic glycol ether, phenol ether, and aromatic alcohol often used together with quaternary ammonium compounds. Phenoxyethanol is a glycol ether used as a perfume fixative, insect repellent, antiseptic, solvent, preservative and anesthetic in fish aquaculture. It is an ether alcohol with aromatic properties that are both naturally found and manufactured. Exhibiting antimicrobial, germicidal and germistatic properties, phenoxyethanol acts as an effective preservative in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and lubricant products. Phenoxyethanol is produced by the hydroxymethylation of phenol (Williamson synthesis), for example, in the presence of alkali metal hydroxides or alkali-metal borohydrides.
